When to call for emergency service

Burst or flooding pipes

Active water flowing from a broken pipe that cannot be contained.

Sewage backup

Wastewater or sewage coming up through drains or toilets.

No water supply

Complete loss of water to the property with no known cause.

Gas smell

Any odour of gas near the water heater or gas lines. Evacuate and call your gas utility first.

Major leak

A leak that cannot be stopped by shutting off a fixture valve.

Frozen pipes

Pipes that have frozen and may have burst, especially during Winnipeg cold snaps.

What to do while waiting

Safety steps

  1. 1Shut off the main water supply if possible.
  2. 2For gas-related concerns, evacuate and call your gas utility.
  3. 3Take photos of the damage for insurance purposes.
  4. 4Avoid using affected drains or fixtures.
  5. 5Move valuables and electronics away from water.

Shutting off your main water

Your main water shutoff is typically located where the water line enters your home — often in the basement near the front wall or close to the water meter.

Gate valve (round handle): Turn clockwise until it stops.

Ball valve (lever handle): Turn the lever a quarter turn so it is perpendicular to the pipe.

Special situations

Sewage backup

Avoid contact with sewage water. Do not attempt to clear the drain yourself. Keep children and pets away from the affected area. Ventilate the space if safe to do so.

Possible gas leak

If you smell gas near your water heater or gas lines, evacuate immediately and call your gas utility from a safe distance. Do not operate electrical switches or create sparks. Call a plumber only after the gas utility has confirmed it is safe.

Information to have ready

When you call, have your address ready, a description of the problem, and let us know if you have already shut off the water. This helps us dispatch the right technician with the right equipment.
