How to Locate Your Main Water Shutoff

Knowing where your main water shutoff is located is one of the most important things a homeowner can know.

Why This Matters

When a pipe bursts or a major leak occurs, the ability to quickly shut off your water supply can prevent thousands of dollars in damage. Every homeowner should know where their main shutoff is and how to operate it.

Where to Look

In most Winnipeg homes, the main water shutoff is located:

  • **Basement:** Near the front wall where the water service enters the home, often close to the water meter.
  • **Crawlspace:** Along the perimeter wall near the water entry point.
  • **Utility room:** On or near the main supply line.
  • **Outside:** In some older homes, the shutoff may be in an exterior pit near the foundation.
  • What It Looks Like

The main shutoff is typically a gate valve (round handle) or a ball valve (lever handle). A ball valve is more reliable — a quarter turn shuts it off completely. If you have a gate valve, turn it clockwise until it stops.

    Test It Now

    1. Find your main shutoff.

    2. Make sure it is accessible (clear any stored items).

    3. Turn it off and check that water stops flowing at a faucet.

    4. Turn it back on fully.

If the valve is difficult to turn or does not fully stop the water, it may need to be replaced. Contact a plumber for an assessment.

    Label It

Once you have located and tested your shutoff, attach a tag or label so any household member can find it in an emergency.
